21st Century Curriculum
As you can see from the students above and to the left, we believe that authentic education means providing students with experiences that are fun, exciting and relevant. This does not mean that the curriculum is "dumbed down", and in fact, requires just the opposite. Students need and want challenges, and a pervasive problem we have seen nationwide is the horrifically low expectations that many educators have for their students. High - very high - expectations for all students is a must for quality education in the 21st century. If you expect it and you provide the proper support, then your students will achieve it.
Note: This project design is very fluid and flexible in order to accommodate individual class needs; the project is designed for participation by classes of all age levels, all grade levels, all content areas and all countries. Therefore, we will support you in the development of the curriculum design for your Project Team once teams have been formed. Each team in the project will be responsible for developing their own curriculum, based upon and supported by the Project Guidelines, and utilizing online materials and resources. As per the Project Timeline we will spend the months between now and January obtaining additional participants - without global participants we have no global projects! Please carefully review each of the items in the drop down menus under Food and Culture as well as under the Curriculum Center. We will be posting a sample curriculum unit very soon. Be sure you have provided all the information about your class on your class' web page so that we can begin forming teams!
This page will contain an overview of designing curriculum for the Food and Culture Project, resources for designing 21st century curriculum, and links to Issues and Themes in Food and Culture which represent a variety of curriculum strands from which you may choose - select one, or several, or even all of them! Of course, your class cannot do justice to all the strands/topics unless you organize the project so that you have students working on individual projects (and collaborating with one or more people in other countries). An easy way to have the students benefit from more than one strand is to divide your class into Expert Groups or Teams, and let each team follow a different track. They all inter-relate!
Each curriculum project will be project-based and interdisciplinary (even if you teach chemistry and that is your focus, your students will still be using knowledge and skills from Language Arts, Art, History, Geography and several more disciplines). It will be relevant, rigorous and real-world!
Once you have registered you will also receive permission to view and edit documents for this project in Google Docs. We are planning this project to include participation from classes PreK through the University level. We are creating several strands within the project, and providing suggestions for activities within each strand and each level. At first the levels will be just Early Elementary, Upper Elementary, and High School. We plan to differentiate further as follows: PK-1, 1st through 3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-9th grade, 10th-12th grade and university.
While we will do our best to provide you with many ideas and resources for numerous curriculum projects, we will of course need the participation and ideas from every talented teacher and expert participating in the project. Our goal is to make Food and Culture a landmark project! So please share your ideas on our Student Project Ideas Page.
