Web 2.0 Tools

There are many web 2.0 tools out there, and the number is growing daily. Many of these tools perform the same, or similar functions. And it is easy to get so caught up in all the great new tools that you can soon become overwhelmed. It becomes difficult to remember how many wikis you have, or how many nings you have joined, how many web sites and blogs you have. There are two easy solutions to that - really!

First of all, narrow down the list of tools to just the ones you really need.

Second, use an aggregator to keep your tools and resources organized. I personally like Netvibes.com. There you can keep track of literally everything you are doing online. You can create tabs for categories. Visit the 21st Century Schools' Netvibes page to see what I mean. Another example is Michael Wesch's Netvibes page; there's a tab for it on the 21st Century Schools' Netvibes page! Notice that we have a tab for Great Blogs. When you find a quality blog (and there are indeed many junk blogs out there) you can set it up on your Netvibes page to receive updates (RSS feeds) from those blogs, all in one spot.

Featured Tools

These are the sites that we have selected. Many have explanatory videos on how to use them, and those are included on this page. Diigo is fantastic! You and your students can not only organize your bookmarked pages, but include notes, highlight and share the highlighted pages online, and add movable sticky notes to web pages. It is awesome!

Diigo - see video and information of newest version of Diigo - 5.0             Also see Diigo for educators to set up a Group on Diigo for your class, or for a collaboration among 2 or more classrooms.

LiveBinders - great for students and teachers.

See Anne Shaw's binder.

Who visits your web page?

Students will want to see who is visiting their web site; these are some tools I use:

  • FlagCounter
  • ClustrMaps
  • Feedjit
  • Revolver Maps
