Getting Started
1. Register to Participate - please go to this link to register for the Food and Culture Global, Collaborative Classrooms Project.
2. You will receive an invitation to join the official Food and Culture Wiki.
3. Create your Wiki Page - as soon as you accept your invitation to the wiki we will upgrade your membership to the Moderator level. Then you will need to go into the wiki to create your personal page, which will be the home page from which your class will participate.
4. Purchase a copy of Hungry Planet - What the World Eats, by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aliusio. This book is appropriate and valuable for all participants, from PK through adult.
5. Review the Food and Culture tab at Netvibes. It contains links to this Food and Culture Weebly as well as to a Food and Culture Wix which contains our developing digital books with information on the curriculum strands, projects to be completed and resources. It is still under development but we believe you will be very excited by what you find there so far!
6. Review Web 2.0 Safety & Etiquette Protocols for yourself, then teach them to your students. These protocols will need to be discussed frequently.
7. The Curriculum - You and your students will participate in the development of the three major products to come out of this project. That is the minimum requirement for each participating class. In addition, your class will collaborate with other classes in a project of your choosing. We offer a variety of excellent curriculum strands from which to choose. See Issues and Themes. Also see Designing Your Project.
8. Minimum Requirements for Every Class
9. A Project Timeline is being developed at this time. Suggestions are welcome!
10. Important! Register Now! In order to allow for maximum globalization of this project for your class ALL classes planning on participating should register NOW. Locating and then connecting classrooms from all over the world will not happen overnight, and if everyone waits until December or January to register there will be delays in getting started. So please avoid delays and problems that could be caused by registering at the last minute.
Don't worry if you aren't sure about the details on your project; the sooner you are registered the better. Much of the planning will have to be finalized when you are linked with your global partners. Spend the fall semester thinking about the curricular strands you want to investigate, about how much time you want to devote to the project and you will also start getting ideas for particular activities you want the class to do. You will need to design the project down from the Final Unit Outcomes and the Final Student Products and Performances. There will be a lot to do between now and January (depending upon the level at which you wish to engage). The entire community involved in this project as well as 21st Century Schools will be here with support and assistance!
